Does 3A Pipe Fittings support Tri-Clamp and welded connections?

Yes. OMSS manufactures both Tri-Clamp (clamp quick release) and Butt-Weld 3A Pipe Fittings in our factory.

  • If the system needs to be disassembled and cleaned frequently, Tri-Clamp is better because it is faster to disassemble and install and the labor costs are more manageable.
  • If it is a long term fixed operation of the main line, butt-welded structure is more stable, more suitable for a continuous production environment.

You don’t need to modify the original system because of the connection method, we can supply it directly according to the existing pipeline structure.

What is the pressure and temperature range of Sanitary 3A Pipe Fittings?

The working pressure of the system is typically between 6-10 bar in normal food and beverage applications and the temperature range is typically -20°C to 150°C. The temperature resistance depends on the chosen seal material.

Before shipment, OMSS confirms the strength of the construction and the sealing compatibility with the actual usage scenario, with emphasis on the stability after thermal cycling.

What gasket materials are available for Sanitary 3A Pipe Fittings?

Commonly used sealing materials include EPDM, Silicone, PTFE and FKM.

We do not default to a particular material, but rather recommend a match based on the nature of the media, frequency of cleaning and operating temperature.

How do I select the correct size 3A Pipe Fittings for my existing sanitary system?

Three key parameters need to be confirmed when selecting the tubing: outer diameter, wall thickness standard and connection method.

OMSS suggest that you provide the specification data of your existing tubing or physical samples, and we will process them according to the 3A standard tolerance to ensure that they can be directly replaced without the need for secondary adjustments on site.

Do I need special welding processes to use 3A Pipe Fittings?

If butt-welded constructions are used, hygienic welding methods such as automatic orbital welding are recommended. We control the accuracy at the end-face machining stage to ensure that automatic butt-welding can be carried out directly, reducing the need for on-site trimming. With welding process specifications in place, the system will be more stable in long-term operation.

Is 3A Pipe Fittings suitable for conveying high viscosity food or sauces?

Yes, but the choice of construction is critical. Highly viscous media is more likely to be trapped in elbows or reducer transitions during flow. OMSS control the structure of the transition on the inside surface of elbows and reducers to minimize dead space and thus reduce the risk of retention.

3A Sanitary Pipe Fittings Selection Guide

What is 3A Certified Pipe Fittings and Where Did It Come From

3A Sanitary Standards were developed by 3-A SSI in the U.S. Initially, they served the dairy processing industry, but have since been expanded to include food, beverage, pharmaceutical, and other fluid-handling systems requiring a high level of sanitation. 3A standards are based on the following logic. The core logic of the 3A standard is that equipment must be designed and constructed of materials that support thorough cleaning, with no dead spaces, crevices or rough surfaces to harbor dirt.

3A-compliant fittings are audited by a third-party certification body and marked with the 3A symbol, which means you can confirm compliance directly with the certification mark instead of having to verify each batch of material and process on their own.

Core Differences Between 3A Fittings and Sanitary Fittings

There are a large number of “sanitary fittings” on the market that look similar to 3A-certified fittings, but there are substantial differences between the two.

Material Requirements: The 3A standard requires the use of 304, 304L or 316L stainless steel for metal surfaces that come into contact with food, with specific minimum chromium and nickel content requirements. Non-certified fittings may use alternative alloys that match the appearance but do not meet the composition standards.

Surface Roughness: 3A requires product contact surfaces to have a Ra value of no more than 32 μin (approximately 0.8 μm), with some applications requiring less. Excessive surface roughness can lead to biofilm buildup that cannot be completely removed by CIP. There is no mandatory requirement for common sanitary fittings, only a manufacturer’s declaration.

Geometric design: 3A specifies tolerances for inside diameters, fillet radii, and fitting fits to ensure that there are no dead zones for fluid retention. Common fittings are designed with strength and sealing in mind and do not necessarily meet sanitary cleaning requirements.

Traceability: 3A-certified fittings are required to be accompanied by MTR and heat-treatment records. This is required for food safety audits and FDA inspections.

Scenarios for the 3A Standard and ASME BPE

The ASME BPE (Bioprocessing Equipment) standard was developed by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and is geared toward biopharmaceutical, high-purity water and water for injection systems. The two standards share a common foundation in hygiene concepts, but have different emphases and distinct boundaries of application.

The core of the 3A standard is cleanability and food safety compliance, and its certification system is aligned with the FDA’s PMO (Pasteurized Milk Ordinance) regulatory framework, which is the de facto threshold for dairy, beverage and food processing equipment to enter the U.S. market.

ASME BPE, on the other hand, emphasizes sterility and system integrity, placing more stringent requirements on weld quality, endoscopy, bevel angles for aseptic preparation, cell culture and biofermentation systems, as well as BPE fittings and operator qualifications.

In food processing systems, 3A should be selected over ASME BPE in the following situations:

  • The system is CIP/SIP cleaned rather than sterilized.
  • The end product is a food or beverage and the regulatory agency is the FDA Center for Foods rather than the Center for Pharmaceuticals.
  • The plant needs to be reviewed for equipment certification by the USDA or state dairy regulators.
  • The system operates at pressures and temperatures that are within the range of conventional food processing and does not need to meet the high specification weld requirements of BPE.

Conversely, when the system involves water for injection, aseptic filling or API intermediates, ASME BPE should be selected; 3A certification is not sufficient to cover the appropriate regulatory requirements.

Choice of Elbows and Variable Diameter Joints

In sanitary piping systems, elbows and reducing fittings are critical nodes affecting the flow pattern, and improper selection can directly affect cleaning results and product quality.

  • 3A Elbows: The standard bending radius shall not be less than 1.5 times the diameter of the pipe to minimize the impact and retention of the fluid in the turn.

Although the short radius elbow to save installation space, in viscous media or media containing particles will produce a dead zone, CIP flow rate is not enough to flush clean.

For low flow rates and high viscosity media such as syrups and sauces, elbows with a radius of 3D or greater should be preferred.

  • Reducing Fittings: 3A specifies that the taper angle of concentric reducers shall not exceed a specified value to avoid turbulent separation and cavitation of the fluid in the expansion section and abnormal back pressure in the reduction section.

In lines for emulsions or gaseous products, reducers with non-standard taper angles can disrupt the fluid structure and affect product uniformity.

Eccentric reducers are used in lines that require self-venting and should be installed with the flat bottom facing up or down, depending on whether the system is to be fully vented.

The ID transition of the fittings must match the ID of the connecting piping. Misalignment of more than 1/32″ creates a step, which is a point of accumulation for particles and biofilm, and is a common failing condition in CIP validation.
