Standard components of biopharmaceutical storage tanks mainly include sanitary interfaces for material entry and exit (such as clamp joints), cleaning systems (such as fixed cleaning balls or rotating spray balls), manholes/hand holes, sight glasses/lights for observation, and instrument interfaces (temperature, pressure, and liquid level sensor interfaces). All components should be designed in accordance with aseptic design standards.
Sanitary fittings are mostly made of 316L stainless steel. The inner wall has been mechanically polished or electropolished (Ra≤0.8μm). There are no dead spots, and it is easy to disassemble and clean. It meets hygiene standards such as ASME-BPE.
Industrial-grade fittings may have gaps and rough surfaces, which can easily hide bacteria. They are mainly used in ordinary industrial applications where no hygiene is required.
The ASME-BPE standard is the core basis for biopharmaceutical device design. It mandates that tank components: utilise certified 316L stainless steel materials; achieve defined mechanical or electropolished surface roughness (typically Ra < 0.5-0.8μm) on all product-contact surfaces; prioritise self-draining, zero-dead-space connections for interfaces; and have stringent requirements for welding techniques and slopes. All these requirements assure superior cleanability and sterility in the device.
It is to prevent the tank and pipeline system from causing equipment damage due to stress caused by thermal expansion and contraction, foundation settlement or vibration. If a hard connection is used, these displacement stresses can be concentrated at the interface and may cause tearing of the tank wall weld or rupture of the pipe. Therefore, the specifications require that the tank inlet and outlet pipes should use flexible connections (such as metal hoses or expansion joints) to compensate for displacement and protect the safety of the entire system.

When converting an atmospheric pressure tank into a tank with slight internal pressure, the new calculations for the pressure resistance of the walls, the top, and the bottom of the tank must be performed to meet the new pressure requirements. The most important part of the conversion, though, is the verification of wind stability and overturn resistance because of the buoyancy force that the pressure inside the tanks can exert, causing the empty tanks to overturn in the process.
For the food/pharmaceutical industry, EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) is the ideal choice for hot water, steam, and alkaline liquid applications.
Fluoroelastomer (FKM/FPM) is excellent for highly corrosive chemicals or oil-based media because of its superior chemical resistance.
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) offers an extremely low coefficient of friction and anti-adhesive properties, good for highly corrosive environments. But its limited elasticity requires careful consideration of seal compensation.

In food, beverage, dairy, and other production lines, storage tanks are not devices that work alone. The tank is usually connected with pipes, pumps, heat exchangers, filtration equipment, and automatic control systems to form a complete production process. Tank components are the various valves, connections, and functional accessories installed on a tank that determine how the tank is fed, discharged, cleaned, and maintained.
These components may appear small, but they largely affect the operation of the entire system. For example, valves control the flow of liquid and opening; pipe fittings and connectors ensure the seal and connection between the tank and the pipeline; and accessories such as sight glasses and manholes allow operators to observe and maintain the equipment. If the design is not appropriate, residue, cleaning difficulties, or leakage problems may occur.
Categories of Stainless Steel Tank Components
Sanitary Tank Valves
Valves control the direction of flow, flow rate, and switching status of liquid or gas in the tank system. Common tank valves include:
- Tank Bottom Valve
Installed at the bottom of the tank for discharging or emptying. Sanitary tank bottom valves are usually made into a structure without dead corners, so that the liquid can be completely discharged and no residue is easy to remain in the tank.
- Diaphragm Valve
The valve body and the medium are isolated by a diaphragm, which has a good sealing performance. It is used more in pharmaceutical and bioengineering systems.
- Butterfly Valve
For switch control between pipes and tanks. Simple structure and fast switching speed.
- Sampling Valve
Used to take samples from tanks or pipelines to facilitate the detection of product quality.
- Pressure / Vacuum Valve
Used to protect storage tanks. When the pressure in the tank is too high or negative pressure is generated, the valve will automatically release the pressure.

- Spray Ball: An important component in the CIP cleaning system. The cleaning fluid is sprayed out through the spray ball and covers the inner wall of the tank.
- Rotary Spray Head: Has a wider cleaning range than regular spray balls and is good for large storage tanks.

Stainless Steel Grades for Hygienic Tanks
Most tank components are made of stainless steel, with 304 and 316L being common materials.
304 Stainless Steel

316L Stainless Steel
- Contains about 2–3% molybdenum
- Stronger resistance to chloride corrosion
- Common in pharmaceutical, bioengineering and hypersaline environments
316L typically has a carbon content of less than 0.03% and is not prone to intergranular corrosion after welding, making it very common to use in sanitary equipment.
Surface Finish and Roughness Standards
The smoother the surface of the tank assembly, the less likely it is to harbour liquids or bacteria. Therefore, sanitary equipment has clear requirements on surface roughness.
- Ra ≤ 0.8 μm: for the food and beverage industry
- Ra ≤ 0,6 μm or less: pharmaceutical and biotechnology equipment
To meet these standards, manufacturers typically perform the following treatments:

How to Select the Right Tank Components for Your Project
1. Identify Your Product
First, confirm what the medium is in your tank. If it is milk, beverage, or ordinary food liquid, conventional hygiene grade components will usually be fine. If the medium is highly corrosive or used in pharmaceutical production, you’d better choose 316L stainless steel tank components.
2. Check Process Temperature and Pressure
You need to understand the temperature and pressure range of the process. If fermentation, heating or steam sterilisation is involved, it is necessary to confirm the valve pressure level and whether the sealing pad can withstand the SIP temperature.
3. Confirm the Connection Standard
Before installation, confirm the connection standard used by the system, for example, DIN, SMS, and ISO. Harmonising connection standards can avoid installation problems.
4. Consider Cleaning Requirements
If your production line frequently performs CIP cleaning, it is recommended that you choose components with simple structures that are easy to empty, such as dead-angle-free valves and smooth inner-wall sanitary fittings.
5. Decide If You Need Automation
