What Could Be the Possible Reason for the Poor Opening and Closing of the Sanitary Check Valve?

Impurities in the fluid medium blocked the gap between the valve core and the valve seat, causing the valve core to be unable to move normally. The internal sealing components of the sanitary check valve are worn, deformed, or have an overly tight fit with the valve core, which can also affect the flexibility of opening and closing.

If the pipeline during installation is not straight, it will cause uneven force on the sanitary check valve and result in the valve core getting stuck.

How to Quickly Identify the Cause of Leakage in Sanitary Check Valves?

If your sanitary check valve leaks, you can first check if there are any foreign objects or damage on the sealing surface. The remaining tiny particles can easily cause the seal to fail and result in leakage. Then, you can check whether the valve disc and seat are worn or poorly aligned. This may result in the sanitary check valve not being able to fully close. In addition, the aging of the O-ring or improper installation can also cause leakage.

Are There Any Special Requirements for the Pipeline Layout When Installing Sanitary Check Valves?

To keep the smooth operation of the valve disc, it is recommended to maintain a sufficient straight pipe section upstream and downstream of the sanitary check valve to reduce the impact of turbulence and vortices on the valve disc.

For sanitary check valves that are closed by self-weight or springs, you should install them according to the flow direction arrow indicated on the valve body. And make sure whether it is applicable to horizontal pipes or vertical pipes. Incorrect installation direction can cause the sanitary check valve to malfunction.

How to Determine Whether a Spring Type or a Non-spring Type Is Needed When Choosing a Sanitary Check Valve?

It depends on the medium and pipeline structure you are using. The installation direction of the spring type sanitary check valve is more flexible. It is more sensitive to low flow conditions, which can prevent the water hammer.

The non-spring type sanitary check valves usually rely on the weight of the valve disc to close. Its structure is simpler and there are no hygiene blind spots. It is suitable for vertical downward pipelines that require complete emptying, as well as some pharmaceutical or biological fermentation processes that are very sensitive to particulate matter.

Why Do Some Sanitary Check Valves Have Strict Requirements for the Temperature and Pressure of the Medium?

The sanitary check valves typically require regular SIP and CIP treatments. For example, if the sealing ring material of a sanitary check valve cannot withstand repeated high temperature impacts, it will age and fail faster.

In addition, if the actual pressure of the system is much lower than the valve opening pressure, the valve disc will not be able to fully open, which can lead to wear and tear.

What Should Be Noted When Using Sanitary Check Valves to Handle Fluid Media with High Viscosity or Containing Particles?

For high viscosity fluids such as chocolate and jam, or beverages containing fruit pulp particles, regular sanitary check valves may experience slow closing response or poor sealing. The viscous medium will increase the resistance to the valve disc movement, and particles may cause sticking.

You should focus on the internal flow channel structure and the channel dimensions of the sanitary check valve. At the same time, make sure that the surface inside the valve body is smooth and free of dead corners to reduce residual media.

What Is the Sanitary Check Valve?

The sanitary check valve is a fluid control device used in high-purity piping systems. It allows fluid inside the pipeline to flow in a single direction. It can quickly shut off when the pump stops or when there is a tendency for backflow, preventing the medium from flowing back.

The Structure of the Sanitary Check Valve

The sanitary check valve is usually composed of a valve body, valve core or valve disc, spring, and seal. The valve body is usually made of 304, 304L and 316L stainless steel materials that are processed and formed in one piece, with precision polished flow channels inside. The valve core is installed at the center of the flow channel and sealed by a spring or its own structure cooperating with the valve seat.

When the fluid passes through the sanitary check valve, these internal components will displace according to the pressure changes in the pipeline, thereby controlling the opening or closing of the valve.

The Working Principle of the Sanitary Check Valve

When the fluid flows in the forward direction into the sanitary check valve, the pressure of the fluid will push the valve core to overcome the spring force or the sealing preload force, causing the valve to open. Then the fluid can pass through the flow channel inside the valve body.

When the system pressure drops or the fluid flows in the opposite direction, the valve core will return to the valve seat under the force of the spring or the reverse pressure, thereby closing the flow channel and preventing the medium from flowing back.

How to Choose a Sanitary Check Valve?

Consider Pipeline Size and Flow Requirements

When choosing a sanitary check valve, you should first determine the diameter of the pipeline and the required flow rate of the system. The valve size should match the pipe specification. This makes sure that the medium can flow smoothly through the pipe and avoids big flow resistance.

Check Material and Seal Compatibility

In a sanitary piping system, the selection of materials is very important. You need to confirm that the valve body material can meet the requirements of the transported medium and the cleaning process.

The common valve body materials for sanitary check valves are 304, 304L and 316L stainless steel. The 316L stainless steel has stronger corrosion resistance and is suitable for food, beverage, and chemical environments.

At the same time, you should also choose suitable sealing materials based on the medium and temperature, such as EPDM, silicone, or PTFE.

Consider Pressure and Temperature Requirements

Each type of sanitary check valve has a specific cracking pressure. If the system pressure is too low, the valve may not be able to open properly. At the same time, you should confirm the maximum working pressure and temperature range that the valve can withstand.

In systems that require high-temperature cleaning and steam sterilization, you need to make sure that the seals do not fail under repeated high temperatures.

Confirm Hygienic Standards and Cleaning Requirements

If your application involves food and beverage production, you need to ensure that the sanitary check valves meet the requirements of 3A, FDA or other hygiene standards.

For the biopharmaceutical and semiconductor industries, you also need to pay attention to surface roughness. A surface roughness of Ra ≤ 0.4 microns can prevent microbial growth and particle adhesion.
