How Often Should Seals Be Replaced?

You should replace seals every 1 to 2 years, and immediately replace them when they are damaged. This can better prevent contamination and leakage. If your sanitary reversing valve is used in high-temperature, high-pressure, or corrosive applications, it is best to replace seals every 3 to 6 months.

What Connection Types are Available for Sanitary Reversing Valves?

Tri-Clamp connections, welding, and threaded connections are available for your selection. Clamp connections offer easier maintenance, while welding provides better sealing. For smaller pipe diameters, threaded connections are more suitable. You should choose the appropriate method based on your existing piping system.

Sanitary Reversing Valve VS Common Reversing Valve

Common reversing valves are typically made of materials such as brass and used in industrial settings like HVAC systems. Sanitary reversing valves, however, are made from stainless steel, meeting higher hygiene standards to effectively prevent contamination, always used in industries such as food and pharmaceutical processing.

How Often Should Sanitary Reversing Valves Be Maintained?

You must inspect the equipment for proper operation, checking for noise and vibration during each use. During annual shutdowns, inspect components for wear and replace them promptly. In high-pressure and corrosive applications, maintenance should be performed more frequently.

Are Pneumatic Reversing Valves Better than Manual Reversing Valves?

This depends on your application. Pneumatic reversing valves are more efficient and reliable in automated production lines. However, they are more expensive. Manual directional control valves are not good for automated production lines, but are better for low-budget applications and offer simpler maintenance.

What is the Service Life of a Sanitary Reversing Valve?

A high-quality sanitary reversing valve typically has a service life of approximately 10 to 15 years. However, harsh operating conditions(such as high temperatures or corrosive environments) may shorten its life. Proper choice and maintenance can also achieve a longer life.

What Is the Sanitary Reversing Valve?

Sanitary reversing valves are used in industries with high hygiene standards(such as food, medical, biotechnology, and cosmetics) to alter the flow direction of fluids or gases. Typically made from 304 or 316L stainless steel, these valves have smooth surfaces that are easy to clean, eliminate sanitary dead zones, and can be sterilized to achieve the highest hygiene standards.

Consequently, they offer efficient switching between forward and reverse fluid flow while meeting stringent sanitary requirements.

Composed of a Sanitary Reversing Valve

Valve Body

We offer valve bodies made of 304 and 306L stainless steel. Typically designed as three-way or multi-way configurations, they allow flow direction switching between multiple pipelines. The valve body has an ultra-smooth surface to make sure smoothly material transport and minimize residue buildup.

The sanitary diverter valve body is designed to eliminate dead corners and facilitate easy cleaning. Wall thickness can also be customized to achieve high durability under operating pressures in different applications.

Spool

Spools/plugs are used in conjunction with valve bodies to switch the direction of fluid flow. They need a precise fit with the valve bodies to achieve superior sealing performance and offer smoother directional switching.

Sealing Components

Sealing components provide enhanced sealing performance for sanitary reversing valves. It avoids internal fluid leakage while also preventing external contaminants from entering. Typically crafted from food-grade materials such as EPDM, PTFE, or FKM, these components offer high-temperature resistance and corrosion resistance.

Consequently, they do not influence the valve’s operation or cleaning processes. You should regularly inspect and replace sealing components during long use to maintain safety standards.

Drive Method

Sanitary reversing valves can be manually operated by handles or handwheels, or automated through pneumatic and electric actuation. Manually operated sanitary changeover valves are better suited for small-scale or low-frequency switching systems. Pneumatic sanitary changeover valves use compressed air to control the spool position, while electric sanitary changeover valves employ electrical power for spool positioning. Both types are right for automated control, offering greater convenience and efficiency.

How does a Sanitary Reversing Valve Work?

Forward Flow

Taking a three-way sanitary reversing valve as an example, it has inlet A, outlet B, and outlet C. When you need liquid to flow in a forward direction, outlet C remains closed, allowing fluid to flow smoothly from inlet A to outlet B. Its high sealing integrity prevents fluid from entering outlet C or remaining trapped inside the valve.

Switching Spool

Sanitary reversing valves switch flow direction by rotating or sliding the spool. When you need to alter fluid flow, you can manually adjust the spool position using an actuator. These valves can also be integrated into your automated control systems. For example, in dairy pasteurization systems, sanitary directional control valves switch spool positions based on commands from temperature detection systems.

Reverse Flow

After switching is complete, outlet B is closed, and fluid enters through inlet A and is smoothly directed to outlet C. The spool and valve body of the sanitary reversing valve are tightly connected, utilizing seals to enhance sealing performance and prevent cross-contamination and leakage.

How to Choose the Right Sanitary Reversing Valve?

Select Based on Fluid Type

Materials of the Sanitary Reversing Valve

Sanitary reversing valves are available in different materials, and you need to select based on the type of fluid.  Both 304 and 316L sanitary reversing valves meet high sanitary standards and can be used for common food and beverage applications.

Due to its lower cost, 304 stainless steelis more appropriate for general-purpose scenarios. Meanwhile, 316L offers better corrosion resistance due to its higher molybdenum content, making it suitable for dairy products or corrosive cleaning solutions. In chemical and pharmaceutical production, 316L also offers greater safety.

Materials of the Seal

The material of the seal must also be selected based on the type of fluid. EPDM is the most commonly used material, while PTFE provides better corrosion resistance. If you require higher heat resistance, FKM is the better choice.

Select Based on Working Pressure

You must verify the maximum instantaneous pressure of the sanitary reversing valve during fluid conveyance and cleaning, and select a valve capable of withstanding this pressure. If the structural strength of the sanitary directional control valve is insufficient, it may easily deform or even be damaged in high-pressure conveyance systems, resulting in leakage and cross-contamination.

Select Based on Working Temperature

If the sanitary reversing valve must withstand high-temperature fluids, pasteurization, steam sterilization (SIP), or high-temperature CIP cleaning during operation, you must consider materials with higher operating temperatures, such as FKM. Prolonged exposure to temperatures exceeding the valve’s operating range will accelerate aging and reduce its service life.

Select Based on Automation Requirements

You can select the most suitable sanitary diverter valve based on your existing production line to minimize high modification costs. Manual sanitary diverter valves are better used for small-scale and manual production lines. Pneumatic and electric models are ideal for large-scale automated production lines, reducing operational errors and labor costs. You can also integrate them into remote control systems for enhanced flexibility.
