Sanitary Valve Certifications: What We Include and What Customers Actually Ask For

What Certifications Mean from Our Side

When a customer asks for a certified valve, it does not change how the valve is machined. The body comes off the same CNC machine, the seal is made from the same compound. What changes is the documentation — the certificates, test reports, and traceability records that prove the valve meets a specific standard.

We maintain certifications for five standards that cover roughly 95% of the orders we receive.

3A: What We Actually Do

We supply 3A-compliant valves to dairy and food customers. From a production standpoint, 3A compliance means no crevices or dead spaces where product can accumulate, all wetted surfaces at Ra<=0.8 micron or better, and complete drainage capability.

We do not pay a 3A inspector to audit each valve. We follow the 3A design standard (28-00 and 84-00) and provide a compliance letter confirming the design meets the standard. This is the same approach used by most valve manufacturers.

We include the compliance letter automatically with every dairy/food order. In 2025, we shipped 3A letters with roughly 8,000 valves and had zero requests for additional documentation.

One thing we see: some customers request 3A certification for general industrial applications where 3A does not apply (e.g., a cooling tower). The standard is specific to food contact surfaces. We flag this when we see it.

FDA 177.2600: What the Lab Test Shows

FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 covers rubber articles intended for repeated food contact. We require our seal suppliers to provide FDA compliance letters for each compound they supply. The letter states the compound name, the intended food contact conditions (temperature range, food types), and the specific FDA section reference.

We keep these letters on file and include them with every order requiring food contact compliance. If a customer requests the letter separately, we send it within 24 hours.

Some suppliers claim FDA compliance without providing the actual letter. We had a case where a customer received a valve from another supplier with FDA-compliant seals but could not produce the letter when asked. We include it as standard.

CE/PED: For EU Shipments

CE marking under the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED 2014/68/EU) applies to valves shipped to the EU. For standard sanitary valves (DN10-DN200, up to 10 bar), the PED category is SEP (Sound Engineering Practice) or Category I, which means self-declaration is sufficient. We issue a Declaration of Conformity.

We include CE/PED documentation automatically on all EU-bound orders. If the valve is staying in North America, we do not include it unless requested.

ASME BPE: How It Changed Our Production

ASME BPE-2022 specifies Ra<=0.5 micron for wetted surfaces in bioprocessing equipment. This is tighter than the 3A requirement of Ra<=0.8 micron. We installed an in-house electropolishing line in 2023 with real-time current density monitoring specifically to meet this consistently. Before that, we outsourced electropolishing and our first-pass rate was roughly 88%. After installing the in-house line, our first-pass rate at Ra<=0.5 micron is 98.7%.

For ASME BPE orders, we include: EN 10204 3.1 material certificates, a third-party surface roughness measurement report, and a compliance letter. No extra charge.

EN 10204 3.1: The Most Requested Document

This is the certification customers ask for most often, regardless of industry. An EN 10204 3.1 certificate confirms that the material has been tested and meets the specified grade, verified by an independent inspector.

We include 3.1 certificates with every order — not just pharma. The certificate covers material grade, heat number, chemical composition, and mechanical properties. The cost to us is roughly USD 2-5 per certificate from the material supplier. We do not pass this separately to the customer.

A note on counterfeit certs: we have seen material certificates from other suppliers that do not match the actual material. We check every incoming raw material batch with a PMI (Positive Material Identification) gun. If the material does not match the cert, we reject the batch. This happens about 2-3 times per year.

Documentation We Include by Default

Questions

Q: Does a brewery need 3A certified valves?

A: Technically FDA governs food contact, not 3A. But every US brewery we supply (200+) requires 3A as a purchasing spec. If you export to EU, CE/PED is also required.

Q: How to verify a supplier FDA 177.2600 claim?

A: Request the seal manufacturers compliance letter — not a statement from the valve supplier. The letter must state the compound name, temperature range, and FDA section. We provide batch-specific letters.

Q: What Ra does ASME BPE require?

A: Ra<=0.5 micron for wetted surfaces. Our standard Ra<=0.8 micron meets 3A and FDA but not BPE. For pharma, we supply Ra<=0.4 micron electropolished with a third-party report.

Q: Does CE/PED apply to US shipments?

A: No. CE/PED is required only for EU installation. US customers need 3A or FDA depending on the application.

Q: Most frequently requested certification?

A: EN 10204 3.1 material certificates. Almost every order requests this. We include it by default.
