The Parts That Connect Everything

Valves get the attention, but fittings are what actually connect the pipes. A sanitary line can have a hundred fittings for every valve. Elbows change direction. Tees split flow or merge it. Reducers connect different pipe sizes. Clamps and ferrules make it all leak-free and quick to disassemble.

We manufacture the full range: elbows (45, 90, 180 degrees), tees (equal and reducing), reducers (concentric and eccentric), clamps, ferrules, caps, blinds, crosses, and pipe supports. All in 304 or 316L, with surface finish options from Ra<=0.8 micron to Ra<=0.4 micron electropolished.

Tri-Clamp: The Standard Connection

The tri-clamp (also called sanitary clamp or quick-clamp) is the standard fitting in sanitary processing. Two ferrules welded to the pipe ends meet face-to-face with a gasket between them. A two-piece clamp wraps around the ferrules and tightens with a wing nut or bolt. The clamping force compresses the gasket to create the seal.

No threads, no flanges, no welding at the joint — just a gasket and a clamp. Disassembly takes about 30 seconds. That is why tri-clamp is universal in food, dairy, beverage, and pharma: you can take the line apart for inspection and cleaning, then put it back together without tools.

Standards: DIN 32676, SMS 1145, ISO 2852, 3A, and BPE. They are close but not identical — a DIN ferrule fits an ISO clamp but the gasket dimensions differ slightly. We stock all four and can tell you which standard your pipe is.

Size range: OD 25.4mm (1 inch) to 219mm (8 inch). Common inventory sizes: 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, and 4 inch.

Elbows: Changing Direction

Three angles: 45, 90, and 180 (U-bend). The 90-degree elbow is the most common. The 180-degree U-bend is used for horizontal pipe drops and heat exchanger loops.

Bend radius matters. Long radius (R=1.5D) is standard for sanitary — less pressure drop, less turbulence, easier to clean. Short radius (R=1.0D) is available for tight spaces but not recommended for viscous fluids or CIP circuits.

Surface finish: internal Ra<=0.8 micron standard. Electropolished Ra<=0.4 micron available for pharma and high-purity applications.

Connection: weld ends (for permanent installation), clamp ends (for quick-disconnect), or threaded (for utility lines).

Tees: Branching and Merging

Equal tees: all three ports the same size. Used for splitting flow into two equal branches or merging two lines into one.

Reducing tees: the branch port is smaller than the run. Used when the branch line needs less capacity than the main line.

We see a common installation mistake: installing a tee with the branch pointing downward in a line that handles solids or sediment. The sediment settles in the branch and blocks it. Keep the branch upward or at a horizontal angle.

Reducers: Connecting Different Pipe Sizes

Concentric: centered cone shape. Used in vertical pipes. The centerline stays the same on both sides.

Eccentric: offset cone shape. Used in horizontal pipes. The top or bottom stays flat, preventing air pockets (flat side up) or sediment accumulation (flat side down).

Wrong installation of eccentric reducers is the fitting mistake we see most. The flat side must face up in liquid service (to prevent air pockets) and down in slurry service (to prevent sediment buildup). Approximately half the questions we get about reducers are about which side faces up.

Clamps and Gaskets: The Seal

Clamps are available in two-bolt and wing-nut styles. Two-bolt for larger sizes (4 inch and up) where more clamping force is needed. Wing-nut for smaller sizes where quick tool-free disassembly matters.

Gasket materials: EPDM (standard, FDA), silicone (high-temp, taste-neutral), FPM/Viton (chemical resistance), PTFE (universal chemical resistance). The gasket is the most replaced component in any sanitary system — keep spares on hand.

Caps, Blinds, and Crosses

Caps: seal the end of a pipe. Used for future expansion points or as temporary closures during cleaning.

Blinds (blanking plates): solid discs that fit between two ferrules to block flow. Useful for isolating sections of a line for maintenance without draining the entire system.

Crosses: four-way fittings. Rare in sanitary systems — we make them mostly for specialty applications and custom skids.

Pipe Supports

Triangle, hex, and round base supports. Stainless steel body with PVC or stainless insert to cushion the pipe. Used for fixing and supporting pipe runs. Available for OD 12.7mm to 168.3mm.

We include pipe supports with most skid packages. They are not the first thing anyone thinks about, but they prevent pipe sag and reduce stress on fittings and valves.

Fitting Standards Quick Reference

Questions

Q: Tri-clamp or welded?

A: Tri-clamp for any line that needs disassembly for cleaning or modification. Welded for permanent runs, high-pressure lines, or where you want to minimize gasket leak points. A rule of thumb: tri-clamp every valve and instrument, weld the straight pipe runs between them.

Q: 1.5 inch or 2 inch tri-clamp for a 50mm pipe?

A: 50mm OD is approximately 2 inch. Do not mix standards — use the clamp and ferrule that match your pipe OD. A 1.5 inch clamp will not seal on a 2 inch ferrule.

Q: What gasket material for CIP circuits?

A: EPDM standard. Peroxide-crosslinked EPDM for aggressive CIP chemicals. Silicone for taste-sensitive applications (brewing finished beer). FPM for chemical resistance.

Q: How tight should a tri-clamp be?

A: Follow the torque specs above. Over-tightening distorts the ferrule and causes leaks. Under-tightening leaks immediately. A properly tightened clamp does not need a tool to remove — hand-loosen the wing nut, tap the clamp, and it should split open.

Q: Can I mix DIN and ISO fittings?

A: The clamps are interchangeable but the gaskets are not. A DIN ferrule has a different gasket groove than an ISO ferrule. Use the correct gasket for each standard.
