
Sanitary Valve Surface Finish: Ra Requirements, Measurement, and How We Do It

Why Surface Finish Matters
Not about looks. A rough surface gives bacteria places to hide and chlorides places to start pitting. The surface finish of wetted parts determines how cleanable the line is and how long it lasts before corrosion starts.
We measure surface finish on every valve we ship. The profilometer reading goes into the documentation package. In 2025, we shipped over 4,000 electropolished valves with zero Ra-related rejections.
Two numbers cover most applications: Ra<=0.8 micron (standard, 3A/FDA) and Ra<=0.5 micron (ASME BPE pharma). The difference is not obvious to the eye but matters a lot for cleanability and corrosion resistance.
Ra Values: What the Numbers Mean
Ra (Roughness Average) is the average deviation of the surface from an ideal flat line, in microns. Lower is smoother. A human hair is about 50 microns. A standard sanitary valve at Ra<=0.8 is about 60 times smoother than a hair.
(Below Ra<=0.4 requires electropolishing. Mechanical polish alone cannot reliably reach below ~0.5.)
Mechanical vs Electropolishing
Mechanical polish: abrasive belts smooth the surface progressively finer. The surface is smoothed but the crystalline structure is disturbed. Standard for food-grade at Ra<=0.8.
Electropolishing: the valve is submerged in an electrolyte bath. Electric current removes microscopic peaks faster than valleys, leaving a smooth, passivated, chromium-enriched surface. More corrosion-resistant than mechanical polish at the same Ra.
We installed an in-house electropolishing line in 2023 with real-time current density monitoring. Before that we outsourced it — first-pass rate at Ra<=0.5 was ~88%. After in-house: 98.7%. The difference is real-time process control.
How We Measure
Profilometer with a diamond stylus. Three readings per valve: body bore, sealing surface, end connection. Reported Ra is the average. We do not use visual comparison cards — two operators can read the same surface differently. A profilometer gives the same reading every time.
For pharma orders, we send a sample to an independent lab for third-party verification. The report goes in the shipment. QA teams check this first.

What We See in Returns
One customer sent us a competitor valve that failed cleanability validation. We measured Ra=1.6 micron — double the 3A standard. They switched to our valves at Ra<=0.8 and passed.
Another: a pharma order specified Ra<=0.5. The customer ordered from a supplier who quoted electropolished. The actual valves measured 0.8-1.2 micron — mechanically polished. We replaced them at Ra<=0.4 and the customer passed audit.
Questions
Q: What Ra for food contact?
A: 3A and FDA accept Ra<=0.8 micron. Our standard finish. No need to pay for electropolishing unless your customer requires it.
Q: Can I upgrade a standard valve to electropolished later?
A: Yes, but it costs about the same as a new valve. Better to order electropolished from the start.
Q: How do I verify the Ra?
A: Look at the measurement report. If the supplier cannot provide one, the finish was likely not verified.
Q: Does electropolishing prevent corrosion?
A: Significantly reduces it. The chromium-enriched passive layer is more corrosion-resistant than mechanical polish at the same Ra.
Q: Lead time for electropolished valves?
A: 2 weeks standard sizes (DN25-DN100). 3-4 weeks non-standard. Electropolishing adds about 1 week.
