What Is a Sanitary Stainless Steel Union
In practice, most union selection mistakes do not come from the stainless steel grade itself. They come from mixing union standards or replacing only one part of the union set.
A sanitary stainless steel union connects two pipes or tubes with a threaded or clamp-style nut, allowing you to disconnect and reconnect the joint without rotating the pipe. Unlike a flange connection that requires bolts on both sides and alignment of multiple holes, the union uses a single nut that threads onto both ends and pulls them together.
We manufacture unions at our Wenzhou facility in sizes from 1/2″ to 4″, in SS304 and SS316L. Surface finish from Ra 0.8 μm down to Ra 0.4 μm electropolished.
By comparison, different union standards may look similar in photos, but their dimensions and matching parts are not always interchangeable.

Types of Sanitary Stainless Steel Unions
To make the selection easier, separate the union structure from the connection standard first.
Flat-sealed union. Uses a flat gasket between two flat sealing faces. Simple design, low cost, even load distribution. Common in food and beverage lines where the seal is not exposed to extreme temperature swings. The flat face is easier to clean and inspect than other designs.
Conical-sealed union. The sealing surfaces are angled (cone shape). The contact pressure is higher at the seal line, so it handles pressure fluctuations and thermal cycling better than a flat seal. We see it used most often in steam-sterilized lines and CIP circuits where temperature changes from 20°C to 121°C and back in the same cycle.
Crescent key union. Uses a crescent-shaped clamp body instead of a threaded nut. You slide the crescent key over the two union halves and lock it with a quarter turn. Faster to disassemble than a threaded union — useful for lines that are taken apart daily for cleaning. Takes less space around the joint compared to a full nut.
Welded union. Both ends are butt-welded to the pipe instead of using ferrules. The inner surface is continuous with no gaps or crevices. Used in sterile pharmaceutical lines and ultra-clean applications where any potential dead space is unacceptable. Once welded, the joint is permanent — you cut it out if you need to change the line.

When You Would Choose Each Type
Flat-sealed: Food, beverage, general process. Budget-friendly, simple maintenance.
Conical-sealed: Steam, CIP, temperature cycling. Better sealing stability under thermal stress.
Crescent key: Frequent disassembly, tight spaces. Quarter-turn operation saves time.
Welded: Pharma, sterile, UHP. No dead space, weld-continuous bore.

Common Installation Mistakes We See
1. Over-tightening the nut. You do not need a cheater bar on a 1.5″ union. Hand-tight plus a quarter turn with a standard wrench is enough. Over-tightening distorts the seal face and causes leaks that cannot be fixed by tightening further — you have to replace the union.
2. Missing the gasket centering. The gasket must be centered on the sealing face. An off-center gasket pinches out during tightening and the joint leaks immediately. With flat-sealed unions, center the gasket visually; with conical-sealed, the cone centers the gasket automatically.
3. Mixing standards between union halves. A DIN union half does not seal properly on an SMS half. Both halves must be the same standard. We mark the standard on every union we ship.
FAQs
Q: Can I use a union instead of a tri-clamp?
A: Unions and tri-clamps serve different purposes. Tri-clamp is better for joints that need regular disassembly for cleaning. Union is better for permanent or semi-permanent connections where you need to break the line occasionally without unbolting a flange.
Q: What gasket material for a flat-sealed union?
A: Same as tri-clamp: EPDM for food, silicone for high-temp, FPM for chemicals, PTFE for pharma. The gasket is flat rather than profiled, so it is a standard sheet gasket.
Q: How much space do I need around a crescent key union?
A: About half the space of a threaded nut union. The crescent key is a low-profile design that fits into tighter pipe runs.
Q: Do you make unions in non-standard sizes?

Q: How do I clean a union that cannot be disassembled?
A: Welded unions are cleaned in place (CIP). The smooth continuous bore allows full drainage and cleaning without disassembly.
