Heavy Wall Design Provides Ample Margin for Welding
When welding heavy wall tank ferrules, the welding metal may not reach the root of the joint, and incomplete penetration happens. Therefore, through thermal conduction calculations, we increase the wall thickness slightly beyond the standard when manufacturing heavy wall tank ferrules, so that the welded connections will not be burned through or incomplete. This lowers the frequency of rework and re-production.
Application of Heavy Wall Tank Ferrules

It is the most common application area of heavy wall tank ferrules. They are welded to food fermenters, storage tanks to connect equipment and pipes. Its smooth inner wall effectively avoids bacterial growth and food residue, and often used in food storage tanks, mixing systems, fermenters, etc. Stainless steel can withstand acids and salts in food and chemical components in cleaning agents, ensuring the hygiene of storage tanks and equipment in the food industry.

After polishing, the heavy wall tank ferrules made of 316L stainless steel can meet the surface finish of the pharmaceutical industry. It guarantees product purity and used to connect key equipment, such as liquid dispensing tanks and purified water systems. The thickness of the ferrules allows for easy electrolytic processing, improving resistance to pharmaceutical ingredients.

The medium in the petrochemical industry is highly corrosive. The thickness of 316L heavy wall tank ferrules can resist corrosive components. At the same time, sufficient thickness increases the structural strength of the tank, and is often used in the connector of chemical media conveying pipelines and pressure storage tanks.

Containers on marine platforms are subjected to continuous turbulence from ships. Heavy wall tank ferrules have a certain seismic resistance, and their thickness disperses stress evenly and prevents the weld from cracking with long-term vibration. In addition, the corrosion resistance of its stainless steel material makes it resistant to marine salt spray and chemical solvents. It is used in marine fuel tanks and freshwater tanks.

The paste in the cosmetics industry, such as lipstick raw materials, cream raw materials, and hair wax, has a certain viscosity. There is a large stirring resistance during mixing and stirring in the equipment. The thickness of the ferrules ensures high rigidity and does not crack during the operation of the equipment. In addition, ordinary ferrule welds are easy to accumulate rust and dust, contaminating cosmetics. The inner wall of the stainless steel heavy wall tank ferrule undergoes polishing and achieves a smoothness of Ra < 0.8μm at the weld. It is easy to clean and compliant with GMP hygiene standards.

There are extremely corrosive, high-pressure scenarios in the new energy industry. The heavy wall tank ferrule is connected to the outlet of the storage tank and contact with hydrofluric acid frequently. The thickness of the ferrules maintains the structure under continuous corrosion to avoid leakage. In high-pressure hydrogen storage systems, the thick ferrule is also effective in resisting cracking caused by hydrogen embrittlement.

Customer Reviews
Ordinary stainless steel materials have more porosity, resulting in poor vacuum sealing. We recommend heavy wall tank ferrules made of 316L stainless steel. Their carbon content is ≤0.03%, achieving the required vacuum level more quickly with less energy consumption. In addition, its 10-14% nickel content ensures no phase transformation occurs in a vacuum environment, thereby preventing crack formation.
When installing ferrules, a torque wrench should be used to ensure that the ferrule forms a continuous seal with the tank body, preventing leaks caused by improper installation.
We offer many surface treatments, including polishing, pickling and passivation, sandblasting, etc. For example, the polishing process can achieve a mirror-level smoothness with Ra≤0.4μm, which facilitates CIP cleaning and is used in food and pharmaceutical industries with high hygiene requirements.
The pickling and passivation process forms a dense oxide layer on the surface of stainless steel, improving corrosion resistance. They are used in corrosive environments like chemical and marine engineering.
Sandblasting creates a uniform matte surface on the ferrule, which improves adhesion while adding aesthetic of the ferrule.
Yes, they can be used with automatic welding equipment to ensure welding accuracy and efficiency.
When designing heavy wall tank ferrules, we consider their application requirements for welding equipment. We precisely design the sleeve’s dimensional tolerances, controlling the outer diameter and wall thickness within tolerances, so that it can be accurately positioned and depth-controlled during welding.
In addition, we strictly control the material, ensuring their stable performance. This facilitates parameter adjustments of the welding equipment without the need for frequent subsequent adjustments.
Dimensional inspection: The dimensions of stainless steel raw materials affect subsequent processing and installation. We use high-precision imaging instruments and measuring machines to measure diameter, angle, and thickness uniformity, ensuring the ferrules you receive can be installed directly.
Material inspection: Each batch of stainless steel material undergoes chemical composition analysis and mechanical tests to guarantee the ferrules’ performance.
Welding performance inspection: To ensure the welding strength of our products, each batch of heavy wall tank ferrules undergoes weld macrostructure inspection and bend testing to evaluate welding stability and prevent weld cracking later.
The vibrations in transportation easily cause scratches on the surface of the heavy wall tank ferrules. Additionally, a humid environment leads to corrosion.
we clean and dry the heavy wall tank ferrules to protect them. This makes sure their surface is free of contamination and corrosion when you receive them. For large orders, we use bubble wrap for packaging to avoid scratches and custom wooden boxes to withstand impacts in transportation.
Our standard heavy wall tank ferrules can be used with multiple components. Their interfaces comply with TC standards and are compatible with mainstream clamps, gaskets, valves, elbows, and other connectors on the market. Their dimensions are designed according to ISO 2852 standards, forming a reliable seal with other products of the same size.
What Are Heavy Wall Tank Ferrules?
Heavy wall tank ferrules are thick-walled sanitary pipe fittings used to connect tanks, containers, and pipelines. One end is used for welding on the tank wall, the other end is a protruding arc surface, and the channel in the middle transports the medium. Unlike conventional tank ferrules, their wall thickness is generally 3.0mm-10mm, giving them higher structural strength and durability. They are commonly used in vacuum-rate tank applications or high-pressure industrial processes in food, chemical, pharmaceutical industries.
How to Choose the Right Heavy Wall Tank Ferrules?
Tank Wall Thickness
The ferrule thickness should match your tank wall thickness, with a difference of <1.5mm, to ensure welding quality and structural strength. If the ferrule thickness differs too much from the wall thickness, it is prone to burn-through or deformation.
If the wall thickness of your tank exceeds the normal range, we can customise a tapered heavy wall tank ferrule for you, which gradually thins from the welded end. It distributes heat evenly and effectively prevents burning through or deformation.
Connected Pipes Sizes
In the hygiene applications of the food and beverage industry, the ferrule diameter should match the pipe size. Otherwise, the connection cannot form a good sealing condition and casues medium leakage. At the same time, the medium transport channel will become uneven in width. This increases transportation resistance and causes uneven pressure. It will reduce the pipeline’s lifespan over long-term operation.
We offer a full range of specifications from 1/2″ to 6″, which can be matched with all your imperial and metric standards. These ferrules have a coaxiality of ±0.05mm, enabling your welding machine to automatically align.
Working Pressure
The ferrule interfaces bear internal pressure and pipe stress. The higher the equipment working pressure, the higher the structural strength required. If the ferrule lacks sufficient structural strength, stress will focus on the connection and cause leakage.
Our heavy wall tank ferrules are classified by pressure level into standard type (suitable for ≤10bar), medium pressure type (suitable for ≤25bar), and high pressure type (suitable for ≤40bar or higher). If there are frequent pressure fluctuations during operation, we recommend heavy wall tank ferrules with fatigue resistance performance, which passes 100,000 pressure pulse fatigue tests and achieves reliable sealing.
Working Temperature
The working temperature affects the selection of ferrule material and structural design. In high-temperature environments, the ferrule must have sufficient heat resistance and match the thermal expansion coefficient of the equipment material to avoid stress at the connection. If necessary, appropriate surface treatment can be added to improve heat resistance.
Within -20℃ to 200℃, we recommend using 316L heavy wall tank ferrules. Their wall thickness and surface treatment are adjustable according to the different temperatures. In high-temperature environments above 200℃, like oil furnaces and incineration processes, it is not easy to creep under high temperature and there is no carbide precipitation.
