Applications of Sanitary 2-Way Ball Valves

Food
Food

Food production often needs to frequently clean the pipelines and ensure there is no residual material. The sanitary 2-way ball valves’ full-bore design enables the cleaning fluid or cleaning balls to pass smoothly through the flow path, reducing stagnation and liquid accumulation risks. Meanwhile the valve body material can withstand repeated washing with acid, alkali and cleaning agents and is suitable to transport and fill the high-viscosity products.

Pharmaceuticals
Pharmaceuticals

Sanitary 2-way valves undergo electrochemical polishing treatment to achieve an internal surface roughness of Ra ≤ 0.4 μm, forming a flow channel structure similar to a mirror surface. This reduces your microbial attachment risk from the source. Moreover, an optional cavity filling design is available to decrease the blind areas around the ball. So it is commonly adopted in fermentation tanks, mixing tanks, chromatography systems, and filtration system pipelines.

Cosmetics

What Are The Differences Between Sanitary 2-Way Ball Valves And Gate Valves?

In actual production lines, the operational efficiency of the valve directly affects maintenance time and operational convenience. The sanitary 2-way ball valve only requires a quarter-turn to complete opening and closing. Compared to gate valves or stop valves, which require multiple rotations, it operates faster, has a simpler structure, and is more suitable for pipe systems that need frequent switching. So in food, beverage, and pharmaceutical equipment, ball valves are often a more efficient choice for you.

What Are The Differences Between Sanitary 2-Way Ball Valves and Throttle Valves?

If your process requires reliable switch control rather than precise flow regulation, then the Sanitary 2-Way Ball Valve is more suitable. Unlike throttling valves specifically designed for flow regulation, the ball valve shows rapid opening and closing and stable sealing. Although it achieves a certain degree of flow control in part-opened state, it is more suitable for process nodes that require a clear “on” or “off” state, such as process switching, tank inlet and outlet control.

How Long Does the Sanitary 2-Way Ball Valve Have A Lifespan?

Under reasonable working conditions, the sanitary 2-way ball valve can operate stably for many years. The valve body structure is durable, and the sealing components are replaceable parts. Once worn, they can be replaced separately without replacing the entire valve.

What Are the Differences Between Mechanical Polishing And Electrolytic Polishing of Sanitary 2-Way Ball Valves?

Mechanical polishing is achieved through physical grinding with sand belts or polishing wheels, making your valve surface reach a better finish. This method is less costly and is most commonly used in the food industry.

Electrolytic polishing dissolves the microscopic protrusions on the metal surface through electrochemical means with a surface roughness of Ra≤0.4μm. It is less likely to adhere to bacteria or particles and so that it is typically preferred in pharmaceutical, aseptic systems, and high-purity medium pipeline applications.

If you are unsure which surface treatment method to choose, we can provide suggestions based on your needs.

What Is Sanitary 2-Way Ball Valve

The sanitary 2-way ball valve is used to control the flow of liquids or gases in sanitary pipelines. It has two ports and achieves “opening” or “closing” through the rotation of the internal ball. In food, pharmaceutical, and clean fluid systems, such valves are commonly used to control process switching, tank inlet and outlet, and pipeline isolation. Due to its simple structure, smooth flow path, and ease of cleaning, it is often one of the most common control valve types in sanitary pipeline systems.

The Composition of Sanitary 2-Way Ball Valve

Valve Body

The valve body is usually composed of two parts and is fixed by bolts or threads. The valve body not only withstands the pressure of the medium in the pipeline, but also needs to cope with installation stress and external loads. Therefore, its processing accuracy and material strength directly affect your sanitary 2-way ball valve’s safety and service life.

Ball Core

The ball core is the core component of the valve, which is a metal ball with a through hole. When adopting a full diameter design, the ball hole’s diameter is generally not less than 90% of the pipeline’s inner diameter. This design can reduce flow resistance, avoid material accumulation, and make the cleaning liquid more smoothly pass. If your system transports high-viscosity or easily-deposited media, the full-diameter ball core can significantly lower the clogging and residue risk.

Valve Seat

The valve seat is located on both sides of the ball and is always made of corrosion-resistant engineering plastics. It is used to support the ball and form a seal. When the sanitary 2-way ball valve rotates to the closed position, the valve seat will closely adhere to the surface of the ball, thereby blocking the flow of the medium.

The most common material is PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), which delivers a good  corrosion resistance, low friction coefficient, and stable sealing. These make PTFE valve seats usually applied in food, pharmaceutical, and chemical cleaning environments.

Sealing Element

Seals are usually rubber rings or gaskets. This is Installed at the valve body connection and around the valve stem, which can prevent the medium leakage through the structural gaps.

Valve Stem

The valve stem is a metal rod that connects the handle to the ball. By rotating the valve stem, the ball can be driven to rotate. Its processing accuracy and sealing design will determine your operations’ smoothness and whether there is a risk of leakage.

End Connection Method of Sanitary 2-Way Ball Valve

Extended Pipe

The extended pipe connection involves leaving a section of straight pipe at both ends of the ball valve, which is used for direct butt-welding with the on-site sanitary pipeline. After the welding is completed, the inner wall can keep a smooth transition without steps or gaps and no cleaning dead zones will be formed.

If your system has a high requirement for hygiene level, such as in pharmaceuticals, aseptic or long-term fixed production lines, this connection method is usually a safer and more reliable choice and also minimizes the leakage risks to the greatest extent.

Sanitary Clamp

The clamp connection is the most common installation method for sanitary 2-way ball valves. Both ends use standard flanged joints and are fastened by clamps and sealing gaskets. Its installation and disassembly are very convenient and especially suitable for production lines that require frequent cleaning, maintenance or equipment replacement.

For the food, beverage and cosmetics industries, the clamp connection saves installation time and also has good versatility, which means you can directly interchange valves with the same diameter to help you reduce spare parts management costs.

Compression End

The compression end connection achieves sealing and locking by pressing the ring with a nut. It belongs to a mechanical sealing structure and does not require welding or clamps. The installation process is relatively simple and is suitable for thin-walled pipes, small-diameter pipelines or systems that require on-site quick assembly.

If your project has a tight construction time requirement or limited on-site welding conditions, this connection method can be a flexible option.

Working Principle of Sanitary 2-Way Ball Valve

The valve stem is rigidly connected to the internal ball. It is driven by a handle, an air actuator, or an electric actuator, causing the ball to rotate 90° to complete the opening and closing action.

When the balls’ through hole is aligned with the channel, the medium can pass smoothly and the valve is in an open state with a low flow resistance, suitable for transporting various liquids or gases.

When the ball rotates to the position where the through hole is perpendicular to the channel, the flow path is completely blocked, and the valve is in a closed state. At this time, the valve seat and the ball are closely adhered, achieving a reliable seal and preventing medium leakage or backflow.

Sanitary 2-Way Ball Valve Installation Precautions

Pre-Installation Checks

It is recommended that you first verify the model, diameter, pressure rating, connection method, material, and sealing configuration of the valve to guarantee they are consistent with the on-site conditions. Then, check if the valve body, ball core, and sealing components have suffered transportation damage, deformation, or impurities have entered, making sure the valve is clean and intact inside.

Installation

Flow Direction: Sanitary 2-way ball valves usually support bidirectional flow, but some valves with sealed bias-load design still recommend installation according to the valve body arrow direction. This could deliver you more uniform sealing force and smoother operation, and prolongs the valve’s service life.

Installation Direction: Hygienic ball valves can be installed horizontally, vertically, or laterally. There are no strict restrictions on the direction. However, from the actual maintenance and cleaning, it is recommended that you position the actuator on the top or side to reduce liquid and dust accumulation and make CIP/SIP cleaning more easy.

Welded Sanitary 2-Way Ball Valve: Please keep the valve fully open during welding to avoid direct damage to the sealing components by high temperature. At the same time, you should control welding temperature to prevent heat conduction from causing sealing aging. After welding, it is necessary to wait for the pipeline to cool naturally to room temperature before proceeding with subsequent tightening and debugging.

Clamp Sanitary 2-Way Ball Valve: It is important to ensure the pipeline is concentrically aligned. When locking the clamp, apply force evenly to avoid unilateral tightness that causes the gasket to be skewed or the interface to deform, thereby preventing leakage.

Compression End Connection: Please tighten evenly until the seal is properly seated. Over-tightening is not recommended to prevent pipe deformation or seal failure.

After Installation

After the valves are installed, you also need to conduct a pressure test according to the system requirements and pay special attention to checking for any leaks at the connection points, the valve stem seal, and the valve body area. Subsequently, operate the valves manually or automatically several times to confirm that they open and close smoothly, are accurately positioned, and have reliable sealing.
