Sanitary Ball Valve: Types, Uses, and Selection Guide for Hygienic Processing

Sanitary Tri Clamp Ball Valve

What Is a Sanitary Ball Valve

A sanitary ball valve is a quarter-turn valve that uses a hollow ball to control flow through hygienic piping. In the open position, the bore aligns with the pipe. In the closed position, the solid face blocks the flow.

What makes it “sanitary” is the surface finish (Ra ≤ 0.8 micron on wetted parts), crevice-free design, and FDA-compliant seals. These prevent bacterial growth and allow CIP/SIP cleaning.

We manufacture them at our facility in Wenzhou, China in sizes DN15-DN100, clamp-end, weld-end, or threaded. Standard body: SS304 for food contact, SS316L for pharma.

Types We Manufacture

Full port—bore matches pipe ID, zero restriction, ~70% of orders. Reduced port—one size smaller bore, lower cost, slight pressure drop. Multi-port (3-way L/T, 4-way)—for flow diversion and CIP return switching. Cavity-filled—PTFE/PEEK fill prevents product entrapment, required for pharma.

Seal Materials

PTFE: Standard, broad chemical resistance, −20°C to 200°C. Tested 50,000 cycles at 10 bar, zero leakage. Reinforced PTFE: 15% glass/carbon filled, higher pressure, up to 230°C. PEEK: High strength, up to 260°C, for steam and abrasive media. TFM: Modified PTFE for high-purity pharma.

Ball Valve vs Butterfly Valve

Both quarter-turn, different roles. In our order data: ball valves for isolation and shut-off on DN50 and below; butterfly valves for throttling on DN80 and above.

QC Checks

Shell pressure test at 1.5x rated pressure (ISO 5208). Seat leakage test at 1.1x—zero visible leakage. Torque measurement recorded. Surface finish Ra verification on every batch.

FAQ

Q: Can a ball valve throttle? No—use fully open or closed. Partial opening accelerates seat wear.

Q: Sizes and connections? DN15-DN100. Tri-clamp, weld, threaded (NPT/BSPT). Face-to-face per ISO 5752.

Q: Lead time? 3-4 weeks standard, 6-8 weeks for cavity-filled/multi-port.

Q: Maintenance? Seat inspection every 12 months or 20,000 cycles. Most valves run 3-5 years before seat replacement in CIP service.
