What Is a Sanitary Ferrule
A sanitary ferrule is the short tube end welded to your pipe that accepts the tri-clamp. Two ferrules face each other with a gasket between them, and the clamp pulls them together to create a leak-free seal. No threads, no flanges at the joint.
We manufacture ferrules at our Wenzhou facility in sizes from 1/2″ to 8″ OD, in SS304 and SS316L, with surface finishes from Ra 0.8 μm down to Ra 0.4 μm electropolished. Standards: 3A, SMS 1145, DIN 32676, ISO 2852, and ASME BPE.

Ferrule Types
Short weld ferrule. About 1 inch long. Used for most pipe connections. You weld it to the pipe end, then polish the weld bead flush.
Long weld ferrule. 2 to 4 inches long. Used on tanks and vessels where you need more weld area or where the ferrule passes through the tank jacket.
Heavy wall ferrule. Thicker wall for higher pressure applications or where extra thread depth is needed on clamp studs. Common on 4″ and larger sizes.
Reducing ferrule. Weld one size on one side, different size on the other. Used for transitions without adding a separate reducer fitting.
Standards Quick Reference
Different standards are close but not interchangeable at the gasket. A 3A ferrule and an ISO ferrule of the same OD use different gasket profiles. The clamp body is the same — buy whichever standard is common in your market.
3A: US dairy and food standard. Most common in North America.
SMS 1145: Swedish standard. Common in European dairy.
DIN 32676: German standard. Metric tube OD.
ISO 2852: International standard. Compatible with ASME BPE in most sizes.
ASME BPE: US bio-pharma engineering standard. Stricter surface finish and tolerance requirements.

Welding the Ferrule
We see four common mistakes from returned parts:
1. Weld too deep inside. The weld bead penetrates past the ferrule face and creates a ridge inside the pipe. This traps product and bacteria. Solution: use a purge dam and set the weld parameters to keep the bead flush with the ferrule face.
2. Heat tint not removed. The discolored zone around the weld must be mechanically polished or electropolished to restore the passive layer. If left, it becomes a corrosion starting point.
3. Ferrule not square to pipe. The ferrule face should be perpendicular to the pipe axis. Even a 1-2 degree tilt causes uneven gasket compression and leaks.
4. Wrong ferrule for the pipe wall thickness. Thin-wall pipe (SCH 5) needs a short ferrule. Thick-wall (SCH 10/SCH 40) needs a longer weld neck to distribute heat.
Gasket Selection for Ferrules
The gasket sits between two ferrules. Material choice depends on your temperature and chemical exposure:
EPDM: Standard for food, dairy, beverage. -20°C to 120°C. Peroxide-crosslinked EPDM for CIP chemical exposure.
Silicone: High-temperature SIP. -50°C to 180°C. Taste-neutral, used in brewing finished beer.
FPM/Viton: Chemical resistance. -10°C to 180°C. For oils and aggressive cleaning agents.
PTFE: Pharma and pure chemical. -20°C to 200°C. Low friction but higher compression set — we recommend 1.5× the tightening torque compared to EPDM.

Q: Can I use a 3A ferrule with an ISO clamp?
A: Yes, the clamp fits. But use the gasket that matches the ferrule standard, not the clamp.
Q: What wall thickness ferrule do I need for 1.5″ tube?
A: Standard 1.5″ sanitary tube is 1.65 mm (16 ga) wall. Use the standard weld ferrule. For 1.5″ SCH 10 (2.77 mm), use a heavy wall ferrule.
Q: How do I prevent ferrule face damage during welding?
A: Weld the ferrule to the pipe before final facing, or use a weld cap to protect the sealing surface. We supply ferrules with a peel-off protective film on request.
Q: What is the maximum pressure for a tri-clamp ferrule connection?
A: Standard up to 10 bar. Heavy-duty clamp and ferrule up to 20 bar. Above that, weld the joint.
Q: How often should I replace ferrules?
A: Ferrules do not wear out under normal use. Replace only if the sealing face is scratched, pitted, or deformed. The gasket is the replaceable component — change it every 12-24 months depending on cleaning frequency.
