The pharmaceutical, semiconductor, and dairy industries have very stringent requirements for line sealing, and in the case of leaks, the cost of dealing with them is often much higher than the fittings themselves. OMSS’s SCH 10 sanitary pipe fittings are helium vacuum tested before they leave the factory. Helium molecules are extremely small and have a much higher penetrating power than ordinary gases, allowing us to detect tiny leaks that are difficult to capture with conventional inspection methods. The results of our leak testing are documented for each piece of fitting, so you can install it as soon as you receive it, without the need for secondary testing.

What International Standards Does SCH 10 Pipe Fittings Meet?

What Are the Special Welding Requirements for SCH 10 Pipe Fittings?

SCH 10 Pipe Fittings are thin-walled and require welders with experience in thin-walled pipe welding because of the low heat capacity and high heating speed. Typically, TIG welding is used with low heat input to prevent weld penetration, and the weld ports on OMSS fittings are CNC-machined for consistent roundness and flatness, eliminating the need for secondary trimming during field butt jointing.

Why Is SCH 10 Preferred over Larger Wall Thicknesses for Sanitary Piping Systems?

The larger the wall thickness, the larger the heat-affected zone during welding, and the more difficult it is to achieve a high finish on the inside. SCH 10 thin-walled fittings are easier to mold to meet sanitary standards on the inside, and the subsequent processing is simpler. In addition, the working pressure of sanitary piping systems is usually low, and the pressure carrying capacity of SCH 10 is sufficient to meet the requirements.

How to Differentiate Between Sanitary SCH 10 Pipe Fittings and Industrial SCH 10 Pipe Fittings?

Sanitary SCH 10 Pipe Fittings are made of 316L stainless steel with a precision polished inner wall and a surface roughness of Ra ≤ 0.8 μm in accordance with sanitary standards of 3A or ASME BPE and are supplied from the factory with MTRs.

General industrial grade SCH 10 is typically made of 304 stainless steel or carbon steel, with no internal wall finish required and no sanitary certification, so it is not suitable for food, pharmaceutical, or semiconductor scenarios where purity of the media is required.

The easiest and most reliable way to differentiate between sanitary and industrial grade SCH 10 is to ask for 3A or ASME BPE declarations of conformity and MTRs directly from the supplier at the time of purchase.

Sanitary Pipe Fittings Selection Guide: SCH 10 vs SCH 5

Wall Thickness Differences

The Schedule number of a fitting indicates the thickness of the wall, the larger the number, the thicker the wall. For example, for a common 1.5″ pipe diameter, SCH 5 has a wall thickness of approximately 0.065″ (1.65mm) and SCH 10 has a wall thickness of approximately 0.109″ (2.77mm). SCH 10 has a thicker wall than SCH 5, so SCH 10 is able to withstand higher internal pressures for the same pipe diameter.

SCH 10 Positioning in Sanitary Systems

Sanitary fittings are used primarily in the food, beverage, dairy, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. These industries have clear requirements for the cleanliness, corrosion resistance and internal surface finish of the fittings, as the media need to be kept clean and the systems need to be easy to clean and sterilize repeatedly.

SCH 10 is the wall thickness commonly used in these systems. It is commonly used because it strikes a relatively reasonable balance between strength and weight. The wall thickness is sufficient to ensure structural strength without significantly burdening the system.

SCH 10 is rated for higher working pressures than SCH 5. During SIP (steam sterilization) and CIP (in-line cleaning), the system undergoes repeated temperature and pressure changes. The larger wall thickness of SCH 10 is less prone to deformation under these thermal cycling conditions and is therefore more structurally stable for process piping in long-term operation.

In addition, the thicker walls of SCH 10 tubes leave the welder more room for adjustment during welding. Both orbital automatic welding and manual TIG welding are less prone to burn-through and rely relatively little on operating experience. This has a direct impact on the pass rate and rework costs in the field.

When SCH 5 Pipe Fitting is More Suitable

The main advantages of SCH 5 are its low weight and low material costs. In systems with low working pressures (typically less than 50 PSI), low temperature variations, and large pipe diameters (over 2 inches), SCH 5 often meets the strength requirements while reducing overall weight. The reduced weight also reduces the requirements for brackets and support structures.

SCH 5 is a common choice in large-diameter, low-pressure delivery scenarios such as gravity flow discharge piping, low-pressure vent piping, or portions of tank connection lines. Such systems are not inherently subject to significant pressure fluctuations and do not require high wall thicknesses.

However, if the system involves pumping, back-pressure control or pulsating flow, continuous or transient pressure changes can occur inside the piping. In such cases, SCH 10 should be given priority to ensure a margin of structural safety.

Materials and Finishes

Sanitary SCH 10 Pipe fittings are typically made of 304 or 316L stainless steel. 316L, because of its higher molybdenum content, exhibits better corrosion resistance in chlorinated environments or in pharmaceutical processes. For this reason, 316L is preferred in systems that are sensitive to corrosion or where higher standards of cleanliness are required.

Regardless of the material used, the internal surfaces of sanitary fittings need to meet a certain standard of finish. Common requirements are Ra ≤ 0.8 μm; in high-cleanliness applications, even Ra ≤ 0.4 μm. The smoother the surface, the less likely it is to retain media and the better it is for cleaning verification.

Due to the larger wall thickness of SCH 10, there is more material margin for electrolytic or mechanical polishing. Dimensional changes after polishing are more controllable and surface consistency is easier to maintain. For systems requiring FDA, 3-A, or EHEDG approvals, this dimensional stability can be advantageous in documentation verification.

Selection Advice

If a system is designed for pressures in excess of 150 PSI, or if it includes a steam sterilization process, SCH 10 is often the more prudent choice. The thicker wall thickness provides a higher margin of safety.

If the system is at atmospheric or low pressure and you want to reduce material costs or overall weight, re-evaluate SCH 5 for pressure and temperature requirements.

Both fitting Tri-Clamps have the same outside diameter and can therefore be used in the same system in terms of physical connection. However, if mixed, the specification with the lower pressure capacity should be used as the upper limit of the system’s pressure rating to avoid lowering the overall safety rating due to localized thin walls.
