Tube Fittings Production Process: How We Control Quality and Material from Our Factory
When you order stainless steel tube fittings from a manufacturer in China, the concern is usually the same: will the material be what I paid for, and will the quality be consistent from batch to batch. This article explains how our factory addresses both — from incoming raw material inspection through to final inspection and packaging.
Raw Material Control — The First Door
The risk of material mix-up is highest before production starts. Different stainless steel grades look the same to the eye. We prevent this with two systems:
Incoming inspection: 316L is 100% inspected on arrival. 304 is sampled at 30-40%. Material certificates (EN 10204 3.1) are checked against the actual material using a PMI spectrometer. If the reading does not match the certificate, the batch is rejected. This happens about 2-3 times per year.
Color coding on the shop floor: Once materials pass inspection, they are color-coded by grade before entering production. 304 = green. 304L = yellow. 316L = blue. Defective material = red. At every workstation, the operator sees the color before picking up the next piece. No guesswork.
Production Process — Every Batch Tracked
Every batch of tube fittings is accompanied by a Process Transfer Card from start to finish. The card shows: material grade, heat number, order number, quantity, each operation performed, and the operator’s signature at each step.
The actual production sequence for elbows, tees, and reducers:
Cutting → Brushing → Bending/Pressing → Drilling → Hole Pulling → Welding → Lathe End Preparation → Rough Polish → Roundness Shaping → Edge Grinding → Wall Thickness Check → Height Check → Roundness Check → Angle Check → Wall Thickness Check (2nd) → Fine Polish (inside) → Cleaning → Fine Polish (outside) → Cleaning → Final Inspection.

Quality Checks During Production
Wall thickness: Checked at 5% sampling after bending. Tolerance is +/-10%. The mold design itself controls wall thickness — it should not go out of spec under normal operation. If a sample fails, the batch is stopped and the mold is checked.
Roundness: A special metal ball is used to check roundness of every fitting type. The ball must pass through freely. If it does not, the fitting is rejected. First-piece roundness confirmation is done before production starts.
IPQC in-process inspection: Every 2 hours, an inspector pulls one piece from each running batch and checks height, wall thickness, and angle against the size requirements. Height ruler and angle gauge are used. Results are recorded on the production inspection form.
Operator self-check: Each operator checks their own work before passing to the next station. Quantity of good pieces and defective pieces are recorded on the transfer card for each operation.
Final Inspection — What We Check
Before any fitting leaves the factory, it goes through a final inspection. Each piece is checked for:
- Material grade (visual + cert verification)
- Outside diameter
- Wall thickness
- Height
- Perpendicularity
- Surface roughness (Ra ≤ 0.8 micron standard, Ra ≤ 0.4 micron for pharma)
The final inspection report is signed by both the inspector and the QC manager. Defective pieces are marked red and separated from the good batch.
Material Traceability
Every order comes with EN 10204 3.1 material certificates showing the heat number and chemical composition. The heat number on the certificate matches the heat number recorded on the process transfer card, which matches the heat number marked on the raw material. This three-way match means the material cert is traceable to the actual fitting you receive.
Common Customer Concerns — Addressed
“How do I know I received 316L and not 304?”
Request a molybdenum test. 316L contains 2-2.5% molybdenum; 304 has none. A few dollars test kit can confirm it in 2 minutes. Or request a PMI test report from our incoming inspection records.
“The quality varies between batches.”
The transfer card system and IPQC checks catch variation before it becomes a problem. Every 2 hours, an inspector checks the current batch against the spec. If something drifts, it is caught at the next inspection point, not at final inspection.
“The material certs do not match the product.”
The heat number on the material certificate is recorded on the transfer card at the cutting stage and stays with the batch through every operation. It is verified again at final inspection. No mismatch should exist — the system is designed to prevent it.

How do you verify the material grade of tube fittings?
