What Is The Main Difference Between Ultra High Purity Fittings And Ordinary Sanitary Fittings?

The biggest difference lies in the cleanliness level and manufacturing control standards.

Ordinary sanitary fittings are usually used in the food or beverage industry with a surface roughness Ra ≤ 0.8 μm. While Ultra high purity fittings are mostly used in semiconductor or pharmaceutical systems, they usually require an inner surface roughness with Ra ≤ 0.4 μm or even less than 0.25 μm, and undergo electrolytic polishing treatment.

In addition, UHP fittings have more stringent requirements in material composition control, welding end face structure, surface residue control, and cleanroom packaging.

What Pressure And Vacuum Can Ultra High Purity Fittings Withstand?

The pressure and vacuum capacity of UHP fittings mainly depend on your structural design, material grade and connection method.

For common high-pressure models, the working pressure can typically reach 0 to 150 bar. In some special designs or small-sized fittings, the pressure level can be even higher. For applications requiring high vacuum conditions, such as semiconductor equipment or analytical instrument systems, our ultra high purity fittings can support vacuum levels of 10⁻⁹ mbar.

Why Are High Purity Fittings More Inclined to Use Welding Connections Rather Than Threaded Connections?

In ultra high purity systems, welding connections are usually more reliable than threaded connections.

Welding connections can form a continuous and smooth inner wall structure through orbital welding. This can fluid retention areas and particle accumulation points and also significantly reduces the leakage risk for your system. 

In contrast, threaded connections are prone to gaps or hidden spaces, which are not conducive to maintaining the cleanliness for high-purity fluid systems. Therefore, they are less used in high-purity applications.

Why Do Ultra High Purity Fittings Require Extremely High Precision at The Welding Ends?

If the verticality, wall thickness consistency, or end roundness control is not strict,they may cause edge deviation, uneven inner wall in the weld seam, or local welding defects during the welding process. These problems affect the welding quality and also form particle sources or fluid dead zones in the system operation. Why Do Ultra High Purity Fittings Need To Be Cleaned And Packaged In A Cleanroom?

Even trace amounts of dust, oil, or chloride residues can affect the purity of gases or chemicals for high-purity fluid systems. Therefore, ultra high purity fittings usually undergo strict cleaning procedures before leaving the factory and are dried and packaged in a cleanroom environment.

This can avoid the product secondary contamination during transportation and storage, allowing the fittings to be directly used in a hundred or thousand-level cleanroom installation environment after unpacking.

What Are Ultra High Purity Fittings ?

The ultra high purity fittings also known as UHP fittings are high-precision fluid connectors specially designed for ultra-clean fluid transportation systems. During the long-term operation, they prevent particle generation, metal precipitation, gas leakage, and fluid contamination, which could guarantee the stability and cleanliness for the entire process system. 

So they are widely adopted in semiconductor manufacturing, photovoltaic cell production, display panel manufacturing, biopharmaceutical engineering, special gas transportation systems, and high-purity chemical supply systems.

Connection of Ultra High Purity Fittings 

Butt Weld 

Butt Weld connection is one of the most common and reliable connection methods in ultra high purity systems. By using automatic track welding equipment to directly weld the pipes and pipe fittings, which can form an overall structure without dead corners or gaps, effectively avoiding particle retention and micro-leakage problems. If your project requires extremely high system sealing and stability, ultra high purity fittings with butt welded is usually the preferred choice.

Face Seal

Face Seal connection is a common detachable ultra high purity fitting connection method. The metal gasket undergoes slight plastic deformation under the clamping force of the nut, to fill the sealing surface to achieve a metal-to-metal seal.This design can provide you with high cleanliness, easy disassembly, and extremely low leakage rate, which meets requirements for high vacuum or special gas systems.

Metal Seal

Metal Seal connection is mainly used in high pressure, special gases, and high-reliability instrument systems. Compared to ordinary sealing, metal seal can still maintain stable sealing performance under high temperature, high pressure, and corrosive environments.

It should be particularly noted that in ultra-high purity systems, ordinary threaded connection structures are usually not recommended.

Installation Precautions for Ultra High Purity Fittings 

Install In A Clean Environment

Ultra high purity fittings are usually packaged in double-layer clean packaging. It is recommended to open the packaging and install the fittings in a clean room or a partially clean environment to prevent particles in the air from entering the pipeline system.

Use Dedicated Cleaning Tools

Please use dedicated clean non-fibrous cloth, oil-free tools, and clean gloves to make your fittings and connection parts are not contaminated in any form.

Strictly Control Installation Torque

For VCR or face-sealed connection components, you’d better take calibrated torque wrenches for installation and lock them tightly according to the torque values specified in the product manual. Excessive torque may damage the sealing surface, while insufficient torque may lead to leakage.

System Purging After Completion

After installation, you need to purge with high purity nitrogen to remove tiny particles, residues, or solvents inside the pipe system. It is also recommended to cooperate with particle detection or leakage detection to avoid your system not meeting the design requirements.
