Customer Reviews
The main difference between these vacuum flanges lies in the different sealing methods used to maintain vacuum. And these sealing mechanisms result in different sealing performances.
KF meets the rough vacuum and medium vacuum requirements of laboratories or small vacuum pumps, while ISO is more suitable for the medium vacuum requirements of industrial large-aperture systems. For higher vacuum requirements in semiconductor and scientific research fields, CF can meet their needs for high vacuum and ultra-high vacuum.
Different vacuum environments have different requirements for the leakage rate of flanges. The permissible leakage rate is 10-5 mbar-L/s for rough vacuum, 10-8 mbar-L/s for high vacuum, and ≤10-10 mbar-L/s for ultra-high vacuum (UHV).
In areas such as the semiconductor and electronics industries that require vacuum environments, the presence of even the smallest leak can have a very negative impact on the production process.
For example, it can reduce the vacuum level in the environment, increase the load on the vacuum pump, and even cause process contamination that can lead to downtime and wasted costs.
In order to achieve a tight seal on the finished flange part and to reduce the risk of leakage more effectively at a micro level, vacuum flanges generally undergo turning to achieve extremely low tolerance surfaces and details.
Moreover, they are then polished to reduce surface roughness and degraded to further minimize the risk of subsequent contamination due to outgassing of the material.
Generally speaking, CF, FK, ISO vacuum flanges are reusable materials. However, it should be noted that before the reuse, you need to replace their O ring or copper gaskets, to avoid the problem of poor sealing performance of these materials in the reuse.
CF is usually sealed by metal, such as copper gaskets or indium wire gaskets, while KF and ISO optional o-rings are made of rubber, such as nitrile, silicone, FPM or PTFE.
What is a Vacuum Flange Fitting?
Vacuum flange fittings are components used to connect vacuum chambers, vacuum piping and vacuum pumps. They are mainly used to form seals to maintain vacuum conditions and the normal operation of vacuum systems. Depending on the structure and sealing method, flanges are categorized into KF, CF and ISO.
Why Do You Need a Vacuum Flange Fitting?
It is true that the vacuum flange piece is an unassuming part of a piece of equipment. But its role is actually quite critical. The slightest error can cause the entire system to break down, leading to costly and more serious problems such as equipment damage in your factory.
Providing a Tight Hermetic Seal Between Components
Vacuum flange fittings can form a complete seal at the microscopic level through extremely low tolerance structural machining, as well as extremely low surface roughness control.
As the slightest contamination can affect the entire batch in semiconductor production. The vacuum flange fittings are able to meet the needs of semiconductors and laboratories for clean environments.
Ensure the Efficient Operation of the Vacuum System
From the point of view of reducing material outgassing, vacuum flanges are usually produced using low carbon stainless steel. The materials chosen further reduce the risk of releasing gases inside the material, avoiding possible material outgassing to destroy the vacuum environment, and ensure that the vacuum system can be operated efficiently and stably.
The 3 Core Systems of Vacuum Flange Fittings You Need to Know About
KF Vacuum Flange Fittings
KF vacuum flange fittings are usually supplied with a 15° chamfer on the backside and are sealed by means of an elastic O-ring in conjunction with a locating ring. Manufactured according to DIN 28403 and ISO 2861 in sizes KF10, KF16, KF25, KF40 and KF50, they are characterized by low cost and easy handling.
When it comes to actual use, KF vacuum flange fittings are easy to install. You first need to place the O-ring between the two flanges and align the flanges. Then, you can put the clamp on the flange and tighten it to squeeze the flange and press the O-ring to form a seal.
ISO Vacuum Flange Fittings
ISO vacuum flange fittings will have a larger inside diameter than the KF and will also seal with the O-ring. They can be bolted or clamped together and are suitable for larger diameter industrial vacuum pipes.
ISO vacuum flange fittings operate in a similar way to KF vacuum flange fittings in that the elastomeric sealing mechanism is not suitable for high vacuum applications, but rather for medium vacuum environments at pressures up to 100-10-3 Pa.
CF Vacuum Flange Fittings
CF vacuum flange fittings are flanges in which a sealing effect is created by the combined action of a cutter and a metal gasket, typically made of copper. When the bolts are tightened, the cutters are embedded in the metal gaskets on both sides to form a tighter fit and minimize the microscopic gaps between the flanges.
Since no rubber is involved, CF vacuum flange fittings can achieve lower outgassing rates and are suitable for more demanding particle gas pedal manufacturing and semiconductor applications.

How to Find the Right Vacuum Flange Fittings?
Confirm that the Flange Material Match The Vacuum Level
In the actual selection, you have to make sure that the material of the vacuum flange can be matched to the vacuum system you need to apply. The choice is based on the vacuum level as well as the temperature.
For example, for higher vacuum levels, 304L or 316L with lower carbon content are usually used, as they ensure less gas emission during use and maintain a stable high vacuum environment.
For ultra high vacuum environments involving high-temperature baking processes, you also need to pay attention to the high-temperature resistance of the stainless steel or sealing material to ensure that flanges are selected for consistent performance.
Ensure the Dimensional Accuracy
Vacuum systems are also demanding the flange accuracy, you must make sure that the dimensions of the vacuum flanges you select comply with strict international standards. Parameters you need to check include inside diameter, outside diameter, surface roughness and O-ring dimensions.
This is also one of the key reasons why we recommend you to work with regular factories, which usually produce flanges in accordance with international standards (DIN/ISO, etc.). They ensure stable product delivery and after sales service for you, reducing the risk of your purchase from the source.
